Matthew and Leigh Nye

The Missouri State Highway Patrol needs the public's help in finding the driver of an SUV that witnesses say caused a double-fatal crash about 11:00 a.m. Sunday on Hwy 160 just south of Spokane.

According to the online crash report, witnesses say 28 year-old Leigh Whitney Nye's car was forced off the road by a black or dark colored older-model SUV that was passing several cars.  Nye over corrected and swerved into the southbound lane, slamming into a pickup truck driven by Kevin Hampel.

Nye and her 23 year-old brother, Matthew Stuart Nye, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Dan Bracker, spokesman for Troop D, says authorities are reviewing surveillance tape from a nearby convenience store hoping that the the dark-colored SUV that caused the wreck will appear on the tape.

"We have our fingers crossed that somebody that knows something will call us, or that the conscious of the person who did this gets to them and they turn themselves in," said Bracker.

The Highway Patrol is asking anyone who may have seen the SUV Sunday morning driving on, or near U.S. 160, to call them if they may know who the driver was, or if they have license plate information or know the make and model of the vehicle.

Both Leigh and Matthew were graduates of Springfield Catholic High School.

Visitation will be held Wednesday (10-13-10) from 4 - 8 p.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 14, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at Eastlawn Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been set up in the siblings names.  Donation can be sent to:
