Peter "Pete" Newman Missouri Department Of Corrections photo

The former camp director for Kanakuk Kamp who was sentenced last week to two life terms plus 30 years for sexually assaulting young boys over several years has been moved to Callaway County, MO to begin serving his sentence.

Peter "Pete" Newman, 34, was transferred to Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center this morning. He will be tested and evaluated at Fulton for the corrections system's education, treatment and vocational programs for a few months before officials decide what prison to place him. He will probably be moved several times during his sentence.

There is still no word on when Colorado authorities will transport Newman to La Plata County to face alleged sexual assault charges involving children there.

Hey, Kathee. What can you tell us about the Fulton facility? And, some folks were wondering over on Randy's blog about how Newman will be housed, i.e. how does Missouri handle sex offenders behind bars? Will he be in isolation? Do they isolate inmates who are involved in "celebrity" cases?

Thanks, as always for the excellent reporting!

In addition to amanda's questions I was wondering if there has been any news on colorado charges or any other states?

Kathee,

Did we ever get a solid answer as to WHEN Pete Newman will be up for parole?

Also, Judge Orr gave him 2 Life Sentences + 30 years.
But if you look at Casenet, it looks like more.

Confused and looking for some answers.

I have found myself wondering during the last week if he might try to harm himself in jail as he the probability of him ever being a free man again is miniscule.

The sentences are a bit confusing. The seven year sentences run CONCURRENT (at the same time) to the consecutive 30 sentences. It is important to remember that a life sentence in Missouri is 30 years. He wasn't sentenced to life without the possibility of parole...just life.

So, as he serves his first 30 year sentence he serves ALL of the seven year sentences at the same time. Then he becomes eligible for parole when about 40% of the 30 year sentence is served (about 12 years.) Just because he is eligible for parole does not mean that it will be granted on his first attempt. When it is granted, then the next 30 year sentence begins.....same process all over again.

During his statement in court, I really felt badly for the kids and their families as soon as he started citing the word and the kids broke down. I thought, he's done it again.....USED God for his benefit.

Kathee,

Thanks so much for these post. I have known Pete since Auburn and am completely disgusted at his response and use of Christian lingo. The guy spent $11,500 to hire a non-Christian shrink to tell the court that he was just "gay, confused and suppressed by his Christian upbringing". Pete has already bankrupted his family and he has the audacity to spend that kind of money to maybe get less jail time. That money should have gone to pay for counseling for the victims. Pete's only goal was less jail time, and his fake sermon should not fool us.

Thanks again for reporting the truth.

We could use some of that $$$. for counseling.... And our son was only a victim of the grooming process of Pete... One step from actual physicL abuse, yet VERY affected by this monster...struggling with Post Tramatic Stress Disorder, depression, and anxiety.
