Branson, Mo.-Police responding to a call of a person screaming for help at the Westwood Inn on the west side of the city found the body of a deceased woman inside one of the motel’s rooms yesterday afternoon.
When police got to the scene they were “confronted” by a yelling and screaming Jerry John Norton. A person identified in court documents as T.M. told investigators that she noticed Melissa “Missy” Sheridan on the floor of room 124 and when she attempted to enter the room, Norton yelled at her to get out.
T.M. ran for help from her mother, who is a clerk at the motel, who went to check on Sheridan. Norton, 33, allegedly slashed A.G. with a knife, according to court records. When police entered room 124 they found 46 year-old Melissa “Missy” Sheridan dead on the floor. Her throat had been slashed and she had several stab wounds to her back and arms. She also had a bruised left eye and forehead.
Police recovered a bloody knife in the room, according to the probable cause statement.
A. G. was treated and released from Cox hospital in Branson.
Sheridan, who was from Reeds Spring, who was working as a housekeeper in the tourist town, had only been in a relationship with Norton for about a month. He had lived with her the last five days of her life at the motel, according to city spokesman Garrett Anderson.
Kurt Olson, a drummer at a nearby theater, had been staying at the motel recently. He said he left because of the “sketchiness.” Olson says he was told Sheridan, whose husband died 11 months ago, was stabbed 12 times and Norton stole a responding officer’s patrol car.
Norton, who was on parole in connection to a 2007 assault conviction, has been charged with second-degree murder, assault, two counts of armed criminal action, tampering with a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.
He is being held without bond.
