Stephen Perkins (mug shot SCSO)

A man from Galena has been charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer after he bit a deputy following a brief police chase Monday.

Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader says deputies were dispatched after Stephen Lee Perkins was refused service at Flat Creek Restaurant.. Callers told dispatchers that Perkins, 46, allegedly hit some vehicles in the parking lot of the restaurant and was headed north on State Highway 173.

After a deputy stopped the truck at Fourth Street and State Highway 248 in Galena, "The subject took off and a short pursuit ensued through 7 blocks of a Galena residential area," Rader said.  Perkins crashed his truck at 10th and Pine and when Chief Deputy Tim Gideon and another deputy approached the vehicle Perkins "exited the vehicle with a hay hook" and threatened the law enforcers.

After several commands, the man dropped the hay hook and was "wrestled to the ground."  As he was being handcuffed Perkins bit a deputy on the calf.  The officer was treated and released from a hospital, according to court documents.

He is being held in the Stone County jail on $150,000 bond.
