When Southern Stone County firefighter Matthew Anderson was charged with statutory sodomy a few weeks ago, it marked the third time a firefighter within the department had been charged with sex charges involving children.
Last year, two former firefighters were convicted and sentenced for those crimes. A jury in Jasper County, where the trial of Larry Joe Smith Jr. was moved on a change of venue, found him guilty of sexually molesting two daughters of a colleague he was babysitting. The kids' father was attended firefighter training at the time of the assaults. He was sentenced to ten years in prison.

On the eve of his May 2011 trial, Jesse Lee Compton, 41, who was charged with statutory rape and statutory sodomy, pleaded guilty to having sex with a fourteen year-old girl multiple times in 2008. He was sentenced to five years on each of the counts. Those sentences were ordered to be served concurrently (at the same time.)

Last week, supporters of a six year-old girl filled one side of Judge Alan Blankenship's courtroom to watch Anderson, the alleged molester of the little girl they love, be arraigned on charges of statutory sodomy. He told Judge Blankenship he could not afford an attorney or the $100,000 bond the court had imposed. Blankenship will address a bond reduction at Anderson's next hearing on December 11th. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for January 22, 2013.
The young girls supporters and, Anderson's parents, who were also in the courtroom, declined comment.

Anderson, who has been with the department for ten years, was placed on suspension from the department pending the outcome of the case, according to Chief David Geyger.
