A Jasper County man is headed to prison for sixteen years for the beating death of father his last year.

Thirty year-old Dustin Eugene Fanning (a.) of Webb City pleaded guilty to hitting his 78 year-old dad, Harold Fanning, on the head with his fists. One of Fannings other sons found the elderly man dead in his Joplin home on August 3, 2008.

Assistant prosecutor John Podleski says that Dustin Fanning told cops that he had been fighting with his wife when he left his home to go to his dads house. While he was there, his father started talking badly about his mom, which made the younger Fanning mad, so he hit his dad over the head twice.

The son told investigators that his father fell to the floor and began convulsing. Dustin Fanning said he picked his dad up, put him on a couch and began praying that the Lord Jesus Christ would bring him back to life before he fled.

In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors capped Fannings sentence to 16 years behind bars. He was facing anywhere from ten to thirty years if he had been convicted of second-degree murder.
