SKELETAL REMAINS FOUND ALONG I-44:

Skeletal remains were found this afternoon along I-44 westbound near Highway 65.

Contractors putting up signs for MoDOT had walked into a wooded area near the westbound 84 mile marker and discovered a human skull under a blue tarp near a brush pile.

Clothing and some other items were discovered under the tarp as well. Investigators believe that the remains have been there for some time.

As daylight soon gave way to darkness MoDOT sent out a light truck and the Greene County Sheriff's Office called in their new Mobile Command Unit to aid investigators with their homicide investigation.

Some detectives with the Sheriff's office left the scene and returned to headquarters to pour over missing person reports.

Sheriff Jim Arnott says that investigators will work at the crime scene this evening and then it will be secured for the night .

The investigation will resume in the morning.
