Stone County prosecutor Matt Selby was recently elected president of the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys. Selby, will lead the Association that represents the 115 elected prosecutors in the state for the next year.

"There are some specific things that we hope to accomplish this year as an organization including getting the criminal code revision through the legislature," said Selby.

Another priority for Selby is getting legislation passed that deals with offenders under the age of 18 who are charged with first-degree murder.  A Supreme Court ruling last year says those offenders cannot be sentenced to life without parole or the death penalty.  This is a cause Selby is passionate about as he is dealing with two offenders who were 15 and 16 years-old when they allegedly murdered Paul and Susan Brooks near Lampe in January of this year.

"Overall, however, I am passionate about the role that prosecutors play in society.  First, we are in the unique position that our job is to seek justice.  Justice is based on finding the truth.  I want to help make sure that prosecutors have the tools to best find the truth so that we can do justice in the cases we prosecute.  That means convicting the guilty and protecting the innocent."

Selby says continuing education and training play a large role in protecting the community.  "I want to do the best I can in this leadership role with MAPA to try to make sure that prosecutors have training, knowledge and resources they need to successfully prosecute cases."

"Prosecutors are in a position to truly help people, whether that is as a victim of a crime, a drug addiction or just protecting society from evil, violent, dangerous people," said Selby.

He says an important part of successful prosecution is having resources such as victim advocates, drug courts, counseling, domestic violence shelters, Child Advocacy Centers, and other agencies available and working together to provide services for victims and defendants.

Matt Selby seeking justice and truth is about as funny as it gets. He has very little room to call anyone evil.

Anyone remember in 2008, Zackary Lee Stewart was tried and convicted in Greene County of first-degree murder for Dulin's murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole but the Missouri Supreme Court ordered that he receive a new trial in 2010. In December of 2010, Stone County prosecutor Matt Selby charged Seaman with Dulin's murder and announced he would not re-try Stewart for Dulin's murder. Funny Selby railroaded a young man he knew was innocent for first degree muder but then turned around and charged the man he knew all along was guilty of second degree murder.

Selby charged a kid with murder when he didn't do it. Finally he got the right guys John Mills and seaman. Selby should get voted out soon. Him and his gay looking assistant prosecuter Darryl.

This is big mess which doesn't count as a win for Selby. Also interesting to note that the wrongfully accused was convicted of 1st degree murder while the true murderer plead out to 2nd degree : Wrongfully convicted man sues Stone County investigators, Sheriff's Department
Zackary Stewart alleges "abuse of police power" in civil suit
July 28, 2012|by Mary Moloney, KSPR News reporter | mmoloney@kspr.com

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- Zackary Stewart, imprisoned for four years for a murder he didn't commit, filed a civil suit against three law enforcement officers who investigated the case and the Stone County Sheriff's Department.

In the complaint filed Friday, Stewart alleges Stone County investigators violated his constitutional rights, had inadequate training, and abuse of police and arrest power on the citizens of Missouri. The lawsuit in U.S. District Court cites seven points, including malicious prosecution, false arrest, and wrongful incarceration.

Named in the case are Stone County Det. Karl Wagner, Lt. Tim Gideon, Det. Orville Choate, and the Stone County Sheriff's Department.

In 2006, while he was a senior in high school, Stewart was arrested for the murder of 53-year-old David Dulin of Hurley. He was tried and convicted in Stone County. For nearly four years, Stewart sat in jail or prison for a crime he didn't commit.

"You are in a little room, nothing to do and it's cold, it's pretty miserable," Stewart previously told KSPR News. "I had enough sense to be scared most of the time."

In a May 2010 unanimous decision, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled Stewart deserved a new trial. DNA found at the crime scene possibly linked someone else to the murder. In December of that year, the Stone County prosecutor dropped the first-degree murder charge against Stewart, but his life was forever changed.

See KSPR's exclusive report Life After Innocence here.

In March 2012, the Stone County prosecutor charged another man, Tim Seaman, for the murder of Dulin. Seaman plead guilty and was sentenced to 21 and a half years behind bars.

It is sad that if you post the truth about Matt Selby you have to worry about losing your job.

I don't have a problem with the case centered criticism. What I have a problem with are the derogatory references and innuendos that were used in the two posts that weren't published.

Wow. I read this blog cause I thought I was getting the truth that I could not find with local media, looks by the posts, this site is just like the others around here, all bout who and what you are.

Agree with anonymous. your all crooks. just "making a living" from other peoples misfortune. prosecutors are the most evil of all corrupt justice systems. I.e there is a man that was charged with life without parole for a non-violent marijuana charge. the prosecutor mittlehauser still claims it was a fair and proper sentence. i say your all evil.

Prosecutors that do their job protect as they should are much different than the scum of the earth type Mat Selby is. He railroads innocent people and holds people in jail with very high bail until they break and plead guilty. Most of them are guilty of something but rarely what he charges them with. He will charge people with multiple counts of a more severe crime than he even thinks they committed. There are many times he knows they are innocent of any crimes but doesn't care at all. Selby only cares about getting convictions warranted or not.

Stone County is corrupt and everyone knows it. A big step in ridding the county of the corruption was ousting Richard Hill next step is Matt Selby. Let's put the corrupt all the clowns like Hill and Selby in the dumpster and make Stone County some place to be proud to live.

Well I guess our prosecutor is very proud of his winning an award due to abuse of power. How about reading this blog and seeing what people think of him and his hurting and using people's pain and addictions to seem like he is doing a great job. He is really a bad person and someday it will come to bite him in the rear just like it did Richard Hill.

I think he should think about Nelson Mandela spending 27 years behind bars simply for standing up to corruption and inequality like we have in Stone Co. He came out and became President and got rid of the same types that put him there. I want to remind Matt Selby that while he is stomping all over the rights of the citizens in Stone Co that it only takes one person to have the guts to change it all! He needs to think about the fact that while yes he puts criminals behind bars he also puts a lot of innocent law abiding citizens that he knows full well didn't commit a crime and in doing so he is going to do himself in eventually. He will do the wrong person dirty one day and then he will feel what he has put so many others through unjustly but at least he will deserve what he gets.

I was arrested on a probable cause statement by a crazy lady's hearsay comments, matt issued a warrant on me,hired a lawyer when talking to Selby his comment was I thought you was another individual, and the fact is I my self was helping the prosecutors investigation assistant out on the individual a couple years before I got arrested, he withdrawn the charges against me and I am now out$6000.00 because he thought I was someone else... Hope you sleep well working with this guy.. If you would like to publish my story you can contact me at jacksrr@hotmail.com

My nephew for some crazy reason wrote bad checks under $500 in Greene Co was a $500 bond, Christian Co was a $500 bond, Taney Co was a $500 bond and in Stone Co was a $1500 bond. The same crime in all four counties and I am not excusing him at all but why 3 times the bond in Stone Co? It is because Matt Selby insists on very high bonds and will charge the person with more counts of the same crime just to make sure he has an excuse to do so even though he is GOD and all powerful and really doesn't need one. Nice that people with the money to bond out are innocent until proven guilty but if you get arrested in Stone Co and are poor you are guilty and will do a lot of time until you admit it.

I am startled by the bloggers admission. No not because she admits that she would rather keep her job then tell the truth, more so that she's actually truthful about being a Bias lap dog usually media types want to hide that at all cost. it has always been the media's responsibility to investigate the truth or lies and present it to the public and let the public make their determination. what a startling admission, if I lived in Stone County with this type of investigative corruption by the media I would certainly send it up the ladder to one of the national news organizations and even the State Attorney's Office.

People are misinterpreting my comment. I don't see anyone else in the courtroom's in Stone County every week like me.

While I don't always agree with Matt, he and his staff have always provided me with documents whenever I have requested them. Yes, a working relationship is a must to do what I do.

looks like you have your work cut out for you, investigate these claims and then if they don't like it I guess you need to find another job, but they shouldn't have a problem with it if they're doing the right thing.its your story Whether you like the feedback or not, your an investigative reporter buy your own admission.

This is the truth if you are going to report every allegation against the people Mat Selby prosecutes true or not or proven or not then have the guts to post every allegation against him true or not. What is the difference? All the people you smear with allegations he throws at them are every bit as innocent until proven guilty as he is

"Prosecutors are in a position to truly help people, whether that is as a victim of a crime, a drug addiction or just protecting society from evil, violent, dangerous people," said Selby.
The problem is he is the most evil man in Stone County MO. He has more victims under his belt than any other person in Stone Co except Richard Hill and his gang of thugs.Hopefully he gets his just desserts just like Hill very soon. The only thing better than thses two eveil men losing power is if they are prosecuted for their crimes as they should be.

Usually higher bonds are set for serious crimes or repeat offenders, or someone who is currently on probation. A Prosecutor doesn't set a bond however, the Judge has the final say in what someone's bond is set at. I'm sorry for your nephews mishaps, Sir, but seems like the other two $500 bonds weren't quite getting his attention.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the prosecutor in stone county charges people with many counts of the same crime to make their bond higher so they can't bond out and is a tool to keep them in jail until they cry uncle.

I am from North Carolina moving to Missouri just got out of the Marines after six years thanks guys I am not moving to that county : )

I agree 100% with the above comment. Matt Selby's goal is to make as much money for the county and state as possible through successful prosecution of cases. It is of NO regard to Matt Selby, as to the state of innocence or guilt of Said defendants.

And the fact is he has a history of making special plea agreements for greatly reduced punishment for convicted child sex offenders....
