Customers of Empire District Electric Company in southwest Missouri had a chance to hear from the utility company about a proposed rate hike last Friday at a public hearing in Reeds Spring.

Empire is seeking an annual increase in revenue of $30.7 million. If the Missouri Public Service Commission grant the increase, it would amount to a monthly increase of $6.60 per customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours. Empire filed the request in July saying it needs to recover costs for improvements made within their system.  The commission has until June to make a decision on the rate hike.

It was the third and final hearing on the proposed rate increase.  The other two were held in Joplin last year.
