Antonio D. Alburquerque (mug shot GCSO) |
A man who has been employed at the Federal Medical Center for Prisoners for the last 20 years has been charged with multiple sex charges involving children.
Prosecutors say Antonio D. Alburquerque, 56, of Springfield, allegedly repeatedly sexually abused three kids he is related to. One of the boys was abused from the age of 6 until the age of 15 - and the other from the age of 10 to 15 from the mid 1980 to the mid '90's, according to the probable cause statement.
Prosecutors say Alburquerque, who is facing 19 sex related charges, also engaged in inappropriate behavior with a young girl as well. According to court documents, he has been investigated in the past by the FBI for allegedly possessing child pornography.
When prosecutors made bail recommendations for Alburquerque, who they say allegedly admitted to the crimes, they noted that he is a danger to the community and that he is a flight risk. Authorities believe he may flee prosecution by going to the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico following his retirement, which is imminent, according to court documents.
Prosecutors have asked that Alburquerque, who has been released on bond, wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and surrender his passport. They also want him to stay away from pools, parks and other places children gather.
If convicted of all the charges, Alburquerque could be sentenced to life in prison.
UPDATE - 06-27-12:
A clerical error by an employee in the circuit clerks office allowed Alburquerque to post bond from jail without having to appear in court. Therfore none of the bond conditions were met.
Alburquerque absconded to his native Dominican Republic and other countries before he turned himself in to authorities in Atlanta.
