Authorities in Joplin say a toddler was found dead in his crib after being left home alone by his mother's boyfriend who went to an appointment at a methadone clinic.

It's not clear yet whether 18-month-old Emjay Corn was dead or in some sort of medical distress when 28 year-old Eric J. Hicks returned after being gone for about an hour on Saturday (10-29-11).

Cpl. Chuck Niess said HIPPA (medical) laws prevent him from divulging where the little boy's mother, Nichole Hall, 32, was at the time of her son's death.  However, sources say Hall was in a mental hospital at the time her little boy died.

Niess said an autopsy on the boy was performed yesterday in Columbia, "We're still waiting on the autopsy reports to determine a cause of death," Niess said

Hicks, who has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, is being held in the Jasper County jail on $10,000 bond.

Update:

Hicks has been released from jail after posting bond.

We do know he didn't die from natural causes. There is ongoing investigation and mom is out of mental hospital and boyfriend bonded out of jail. They've both been seen at methodone clinic. There is much more to the story too. It will all come to light one of these days. Emjay was so innocent and young to have died such a tragic death.

Re: Emjay Corn

I'm with Pam on this one. Nothing has been clear from the beginning on this. I tend to believe there is a LOT that the police have not said and that eventually the truth will come out. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this baby boy. There are just too many things that do not make sense. I used to be a cop and never was able to turn my 'cop mind' off. This case needs to closed and the truth be told. JMHO

Amen Sonya... Emjay has finally escaped the hell he was living in. Now if the truth would just come out maybe the rest of the family could go on with life as we once knew it.

Hi Kathrin,

That title is really misleading. That was written the day endangering the welfare of a child charges were dropped against Hicks. The next day he was charged with second-degree murder.
