Wheeler was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated on August 30, 2008, after a Highway Patrol trooper pulled him over for allegedly recklessly driving his Chevy Tahoe on southbound 65 near the James River Expressway. Wheeler was also charged with failing to drive within a single lane on a roadway that has three or more lanes.

The Springfield News Leader received an e-mail from Wheeler that reads, "I am very disappointed that I placed myself in this situation. This incident has weighed VERY heavily on me both personally and as a public figure within the Nixa community."

Wheeler appeared in court on May 26th, and three days later tendered his resignation which the board unanimously approved it.

Now the search for a replacement for Wheeler is underway.  So far the district has received over thirty applications for the position.

Dr. Wheeler is due back in court on June 30th.

UPDATE 11-19-10:

Dr. Wheeler pleaded guilty to drunk driving and was placed on two years supervised probation and fined $400.

Wheeler has started a SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) chapter at the school where he is presently employed.
