The preliminary hearing for a Douglas County man charged with allegedly killing his pregnant wife and 9-month-old son with a double edged sword and pocket knife has been postponed.

Dan A. Andrews appeared in Associate Circuit Court today in Douglas County today with his attorney and was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.

Back in March authorities were called by a friend who had been living with Andrews, his wife Mary Burchell and their baby boy, Taylor.

When cops arrived at the couples home they discovered a pregnant Burchell lying on the couples bed with extensive injuries to the left side of her face. According to court documents she also had multiple stab wounds on her body.....little Taylor was found slashed to death in his crib.

Family members say that Dan Allen Andrews has had mental health problems since suffering a brain injury several years ago. They say that they had attempted to have him hospitalized several times for mental health issues in the past.

They became so concerned that he might harm his family that the took him to a West Plains hospital a month before the killings. They say the hospital kept him a few days, then released him.

The new date for Andrews preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 7th.
