Charges are pending against an Oronogo man who allegedly tried to gouge the eyes out of a Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy early this morning.
Deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in progress at at 1925 Webbwood Drive in Oronogo around 4 this morning at the home of Wayne Ellis Stewart Jr., 34, and Nikki Ann Ford, 33.

The incident report says that when a deputy arrived on the scene, a woman and child were running toward him, chased by a Stewart.

Dunn says that Stewart allegedly threatened to kill the officer and at one point the deputy ordered Stewart to get get on the ground, a struggle ensued and then Stewart allegedly tried to gouge out the eyes of the deputy.

The deputy drew his weapon firing a single shot from his weapon, shooting Stewart in the jaw at close range. The .40-caliber bullet passed through the man’s face and grazed his shoulder, the sheriff said.

An off duty officer that lives nearby came to the officer’s assistance and helped subdue the suspect, Dunn said.

Dunn says that at this time he will not name the deputy that was assaulted because of the emotional trauma sustained.

Stewart was taken by ambulance to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin with non life threatening injuries, however he was transported to St. John's hospital in Springfield with serious injuries today.

Jasper County Prosecutor Dean Dankelson said his office will hold of the filing of charges until Stewart is released from the hospital so that the county will not incure the mans medical costs.
