A man from Seligman has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his girlfriends baby.In February of 2006 cops were called to the Townsman Motel in Miami, Oklahoma, where they found 15 month-old McKenna White dead.
The little girls mother, Catherine White, told investigators that she left McKenna with Travis Steed for about 5 hours while she went to go pick up
her other children in Goodman, Missouri.Authorities say that Steed and White were high on meth, and that Steed was angry with White for not going to get him some more of the drug before she left him with the little girl; and that Steed beat McKenna to death in retaliation,
At Steed's trial's the medical examiner testified that the toddler suffered a a five-inch fracture to the back of the skull and died of blunt force trauma to the head from repeated blows to the head and face.
It took two trials for prosecutors to secure a conviction against 32 year-old Steed of Seligman. The first ended in a mistrial; Steed was found guilty at the second trial on November 20, 2008.
After the sentence was handed down, Steed posted a notice that he is appealing the verdict in Ottawa County District Court.
Catherine White was charged in October of 2007 with child neglect. She pleaded guilty to those charges and was sentenced to 25 years in prison, however, the judge in the case suspended all but 10 months of the sentence.
Catherine White received credit for time served and was released from jail.
