Authorities pulled a car over near Sunshine and Glenstone about 12:45 a.m. for suspicion of DWI. As officers were arresting Magic S. Peters, 24, officers asked the other three passengers to step out of the car. That is when Dumone D. Starks, 22, bolted from the car and began firing a handgun at officers. Peters was taken into custody on several outstanding warrants.
Magic S. Peters
One of the officers got in a foot chase with Starks and ordered him to stop. A news release says: “During the foot chase Starks removed a handgun from under his shirt, worked the action of the semi-automatic pistol charging the weapon, and then pointed the gun at the officer. The officer again issued verbal commands to drop the weapon, the suspect refused and the officer fired his duty weapon killing the suspect.”
The weapon that Starks’ used was stolen, according to Lt. Kirk Manlove.
Starks had a federal conviction for possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute. In February of 2009 he pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest.
Peters was wanted on warrants and/or parole violations for unlawful use of a weapon, distribution of a controlled substance near a school, and distribution/manufacturing of a controlled substance. He was charged with misdemeanor DWI charges are expected to be filed soon.
Corporal James Dougherty, 36, a 14-year veteran of the Springfield Police Department has been placed on routine administrative leave with pay as the investigation continues.
The Springfield Police Department has asked the Highway Patrol to assist in the investigation.

GOOD!!1 LESS PILE OF CRAP ON THE STREETS OF SPRINGFIELD
wow, let's not forget this was a man that had family, friends, and a child. Let us not judge others, that's for God to do. This man has left behind a 3 yr old child because an officer was racial profiling in the first place. Dumone was scare...ask yourself what you would do...Honestly can't wait for your judgement day
Officer Involved Shooting:
Okay, they guy left behind a 3 year old baby - that is sad. Let me tell you what is even sadder: racial profiling was mentioned. I personally know Corp. Dougherty and he does not profile. Dumone may have been scared but he should not have ran, should NOT have pulled a gun and stay out of the crime business. Corp. Dougherty was just doing his job. That is some thing most of you forget -- officers have a JOB to do. One we ask them to do everyday. They risk their lives to save others.Dumone had a gun and was a drug dealer - he was just asking for trouble.

Dumone Starks
Dumone was not a drug dealer, he ran because he had a gun, he did not want to go back to prison. He did not turn and try to shoot, there was one officer there he left the guy that had the warrant and pulled over and a female standing there while he chased Damone.... Damone was chased and gunned down period.
THE POLICE WAS CERTAINLY RACIAL PROFILING THE OFFICER KILLED HIM BECAUSE HE WAS AFRICAN AMERICAN THEN THEY COVERED IT UP BY SAYING HE PULLED A GUN ON THEM WHICH NEVER HAPPENED THEY SHOT IT OVER TWELVE TIMES SO THAT SAYS A LOT RIGHT THERE ANYWAY DUMONE YOU ARE MISSED AND LOVED BY SO MANY AND YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN THE POLICE OFFICER WHO KILLED YOU WILL HALF TO ANSWER TO GOD ONE DAY THAT IS FOR CERTAIN I KNOW THE TRUTH AS ALOT OF OTHERS DO AS WELL YOU WERE SUCH AN AMAZING PERSON YOU WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR ANYONE YOU WERE SO GENUINE
